Be my valentine!! Fun ideas for this year!
Saturday, January 14th, 2012Fashion Friday! Guest Blogger Nikki Hilger!
Friday, August 5th, 2011I am so excited to introduce a wonderful client and an even better friend to the blog! Nikki Hilger has been a LONG time loyal client with me and she consistently wows me with her clothing selections for their sessions. She really GETS it- and is so good at what she does that I thought it would be fantastic to have her offer some great advice about what to wear for your session. Believe me- she knows what she’s talking about:-). Thanks Nikki- I’m so lucky to have you in my life! xoxo
What to wear, What to wear? by Nikki Hilger
You booked your session date months in advance – made sure there were no tennis matches or piano lessons and that your husband was actually going to be in the 585 area code that day – the long range weather forecast shows sunshine for the big day. Great! Now let’s take a trip to the closet and decide what to wear. This is how I handled my first photo session with Amanda several years ago and as much as I loved those first photos I knew right away that I would plan the wardrobe a little more next time, the pale tones and white just didn’t “pop” in my, then neutral, living room – looking back it is no wonder that the majority of my order that time was of the kids faces close up! The clothes really do matter and as much as you love every shot that Amanda snaps you will love them that much more if your clothing helps frame the faces of the children and tells the story of your family.
For our future sessions I planned and thought about the wardrobe choices almost as soon as I booked my date. I love these photographs so much and we live with them like art on our walls.
So, here are a few of the tips that I pass on to friends when they go to visit Amanda for the first time.
• I think it can be fun to set the scene. For a fall session that we did at Kershaw Park on the lake in Canandaigua I wanted a feeling of a Sunday after church walking on the water and playing all together. When we did our Christmas card shoot this year I imagined that we were going to a Christmas party with friends. We all look like we are going to the same place – we belong together!
• Color, color, color! And not just blue or pink but consider pale or saturated. Are you going to be near the water where the background will be pale? Then make sure that your colors pop against that pale blue sky and water. I also think that black and white photos look best with clothing in more saturated tones, it provides depth and definition.
• Think twice before you “match” the whole family – white tops and khaki or denim on the bottom for the whole family might seem easy but I don’t think that choice really meshes with the natural life moments that Amanda is so skilled at capturing.
• Stay away from too much pattern and leave the logos and wording at home! These things will serve to distract rather than enhance the scene and will draw your eyes away from the beautiful faces of your family.
• Steal ideas from professional stylists – look at magazines and catalogues for inspiration about how to make a cohesive photo. I am not suggesting that you open the latest J.Crew catalogue and order everything on page 52 (although I totally did that once and I loved it!) but it is a great place for ideas and if you look closely you will notice one or two items of the wardrobe that jump out. A funky flowered headband or a pair of argyle knee socks on a little girl, a dapper vest on a little boy or a chunky statement necklace on mom. Some of my favorite places for inspiration are J.Crew, Tea Collection, Boden and Gap Kids. They all have websites of course but I like walking into the store or flipping the pages of a catalogue for the best ideas.
• Let your wardrobe choices set the scene and let Amanda take care of the rest!
Here are some examples from past sessions that show exactly what Nikki means. Isn’t she the best??!!!
You will be missed:-( | Rochester Family photographer
Thursday, July 21st, 2011I am so bummed that one of my long-time family clients just moved down South this month:-(. After photographing their family for almost 3 years I had to say goodbye- but hope it’s not forever! Hopefully they will come back up this way once Dave finishes his residency and then we can reconnect! OR I guess I’ll just have to make my way to North Carolina to see them!! Best of luck to you guys- you will be missed!!!
Blog carnival- “Laughter”… {Rochester portrait photographer}
Sunday, July 17th, 2011I am so honored to be able to participate in this fantastic blog carnival with so many incredibly talented photographers!! Each month we will choose a theme and create an image that reflects it. Last month’s theme was “framed” and this month we chose “laughter”. I had a ton of images I could have used for this- but this one took the cake. Especially since it made me literally laugh out loud when I saw it. Little Mila was a ham throughout the session and reminded me SO much of Lola when she was that age. I love photographing two year old kiddos- it is one of the cutest ages, because they are starting to develop their little personalities and are completely unfiltered…. as evidenced by this photo:-)
Next up in the blog carnival is Grand Rapids, Michigan photographer Mary Beth Vreugdenhill! She’s awesome!!!
Lola turns 5! And other exciting news!

I can’t believe that my baby is now a 5 year old little girl. Although so much has happened in the 5 years since I was blessed with her, I still can’t believe how quickly time has gone and how fast she’s grown from a newborn to a soon-to-be kindergartner. Our little Lola is such a sparkling spirit- full of imagination, ideas, spit-fire, and kindness. I am continually taken by her will, her intelligence, and her ability to make people smile. Of course I would say this since I’m her mother, but I truly believe that this little girl is destined for great things. And I am so lucky to be her momma.
Happy Birthday sweet L.ots-O.f-L.ove-A.lways- you are so loved!!!!
Also, I am honored to have been nominated as a “Women to Watch” in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. To see the article just click here.
Magnificent Maddox and his marvelous parents | Rochester portrait photographer
Thursday, July 7th, 2011I am SO lucky to know this wonderful family, and to have had the luxury to photograph this little man (who, without being offering tmi, made my uterus literally ache)! Spending time with him was like cuddling a little piece of heaven, and his parents are the icing on the cake. Maddox has the coolest, most genuine, and loving parents ( and wonderfully doting Aunt Jill!)- and I’m so glad we’re friends:-).
Things I loved about this session: a parents pure adoration of their new baby, Maddox’s sweet little lips, having Aunt Jill as an assistant, cranking more heat in their house than had been seen in a while from my space heater, Maddox pooping all over Chad, seeing an incredible sisterly bond, willingness to try anything, their complete faith in me, lots of baby snuggles, friendship, genuineness, creativity, faith, and the knowledge that another baby has been born to truly loving and fantastic people! Thanks guys- you are the best!
Blog Carnival {Framed}… Rochester NY portrait photographer
Sunday, June 5th, 2011
It’s carnival time again and I am honored to be able to participate in such a fantastic project with so many talented photographers! This month’s theme is “framed” and I will be honest, I almost totally bailed on this one:-(! I have been running around like a crazy person trying to get the studio ready, proof sessions, do end of the school year kid thing etc… so I didn’t have time to go out and shoot specifically for this theme BUT I had an image in mind from last month that I thought would work- phew…. lol.
I took this shot one weeknight right before the kids were getting ready for bed, and had to shoot through a little crack in my door bc I KNEW if Andy or Lola saw me that they would move and the moment would be gone! So, the door “framed” the shot. And I totally love everything about it- the frame, the emotion, and of course the subjects in it:-)!
Next up in the blog carnival is the fabulous
St. Louis Children’s Photographer, Lauri Baker- swing by and check out her post!
BIG NEWS!!!!! We’re moving!| Rochester children’s photographer
Thursday, May 19th, 2011Well, it’s official!!!
As of June 1st we will be moving our studio and I am so excited!!! After a lot of soul searching we have decided to move literally right down the street to 4 North Main St! Located directly on the corner of main st and monroe we will be in the same building as Jackson and Hines, on the second floor. AND we’re right across from Starbucks and next to Thirstys
, so depending on your beverage of choice you’re all set lol!
This new space is PERFECT for a natural light photography studio- wide open floor plan, HUGE floor to ceiling windows, gorgeous light- and after some mild apprehension I feel it’s the best decision for the business. While I LOVE on-location shooting and still do a ton of it, I found that a lot of my clients want to come to me, and we simply outgrew our current space. In addition to our new move we are going to be offering more collections (including some with digital options) that I feel will allow us to better serve a multitude of clients. PLUS, we will now be offering makeup application (for moms and teens- we’re steering clear of the child-beauty-pageant-star-look if you know what I mean) in addition to our sessions. Mom can pamper herself with some natural makeup while I photograph the kiddos and Dad can either swing by Starbucks for a coffee (or Thirstys for a cocktail lol) until we met up for the family portion of our session! Not sure about all of you but that sounds pretty sweet to me!! We will also be offering complimentary pre-session consults at the studio with each session so we can go into the shoot with a very clear plan about what we want to achieve from the day. With new gallery display options and a variety of custom products at the new space we feel that giving you a chance to meet with us before your session will only add to the custom experience we want to give each of our clients.
So, if over the course of the next few weeks you see me moving furniture and carrying paint cans you’ll know why! We have some fantastically fun ideas for our grand openings so stay tuned!!
And of course, it wouldn’t be a proper blog post without some images! I LOVE this family:-) Mom is one of the strongest, most fun, and kindest women I have the pleasure of calling my friend, and her boys could not be cuter. Enjoy!!

Saturday, May 14th, 2011” This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine”
I am so honored to be able to post these images- not only because I love the images themselves but also because I love this family on a personal level as well. Andy and Dom went to high school together (and I’m sure only caused a little trouble) and Jules and I became fast friends. Thankfully we live about 3 minutes away from each other so we can have weeknight dinners, and I can get some snuggles from their adorable daughter Harper (who, btw, flirts with Andy like a girl after my own heart). I can’t wait to meet the new additional to their family who is due any day now!!!!
Love you guys!!
xoxo
